Default Syrian with a bald spot?

Hi! I just noticed that my shorthaired syrian has a spot with much less hair between and below his scent glands. I'm not sure if I'm worrying about nothing, but I want a second opinion. Thanks!

Have you noticed him scent marking a lot or just rubbing against things, it’s not the usual place to lose fur with that kind of thing but it is possible.
Any other changes, eating, drinking, peeing etc? Hair loss in this area can be a symptom of Cushing’s disease but it’s really hard to say if it may be that from the photo & without any other info, hopefully not but something to consider.

Hello again! I haven't noticed any strange behavior from him, I noticed the bald spot in his playpen, actually, and while he was in there, he did do three or four circles, which might might be more than he usually does. I just did some very fast research on Cushing's disease, and I don't think he's drinking more than usual, but he might be emptying his food bowl more often than normal. I'll do some more not quite as fast research and keep an eye on him.

Hello there, possible Cushings is not an easy thing to diagnose or deal with in a hamster.
You have posted this in the healthcare section. If you look up at the sticky’s, you will see my thread Cushings and treatment. It contains everything I had to learn but importantly a photo of Mocho’s lower back that led to the first vet visit. Your photo is nothing like my boy’s but you can keep an eye on how things develop. I hope the information there helps you.

Agree with the above, possibly cushings so will need vet attention to manage it properly.
How old is he?
Is there anything in his cage like a tube or jar that he could be scraping his back against?
Is the hair falling out in your hands? Like if you gently pull the hair does it just come out? or is it a gradual loss of hair?
Another possibility is mites which will need to be checked by vets or hes simply moulting.

Hi. Nibbles is about nine and a half months old and he doesn't really have anything that he could be rubbing against to make the hair fall out. When he's awake tonight I'll see if his hair is actually falling out when I'm holding him. With mites, wouldn't he be scratching at the spot a lot? He isn't doing that, so I'm not sure it would be mites. Thanks for all the great advice!

It’s very unlikely to be mites, they usually but not always scratch a lot with mites but it mostly begins around the ears & eyes rarely in a patch like this.
If you can’t figure out the cause you could still try giving him a pinch of flax seeds daily (linseed) & a drop of evening primrose oil on food, I’ve found this to work really well with hair loss & general coat & skin condition.

I already give him some flax seeds, not daily, more like every two weeks. I agree with you that I don't think it's mites or parasites, and I've read more about Cushing's disease and it seems unlikely that he has that, either. If it doesn't stop in the next few days, I'll try giving him more flax and try the evening primrose oil.
