This is not necessarily the case and treating hamster with metacam unnecessarily is not a good idea. The usually scratch at them to get the scent on their paws and this lets them spread it further around. When the scent glands excrete a lot of scent the area gets greasy and the fur can look thin over them. It also gets barer with age. Metacam can affect the kidneys so it should be reserved for genuine need under a vets advice. If you are worried about any coat or gland issues then see an experienced vet.
