HamsterGranny, yes you are right, he is just scent marking, nothing to worry about, I wouldn't clean anything out in his cage for at least the first couple of weeks if not longer.

Question Re: Syrian Scent Glands

Hello! My female Teddy bear (Syrian) hamster recently has developed a dark spot in her genital area and it smells a little. It also is a little bit crusty. She’s not acting any different and is still very active but i just want to make sure she’s okay and if I need to take her to the vet or not. Im still relatively new hamster owner. She is my second hamster. Please help!!!

Younger hamsters have less noticable scent glands and females too are less prominant. Pigmentation increases on the scent glands, ears and around the genitals as a hamster matures and especially in black eyed hamsters. The scent glands can appears 'wet' or greasy and mark the fur making it flat depending on how much scent is secreted.
Hamsters can sometimes be seen rubbing their hips on the cage sides, toys etc to spread their scent and they often do this just after cleaning out the cage to re-mark their territory.
They can be mistaken for moles, scabs and cancers but these are quite normal.
Dwarf hamsters have a scent gland on their tummy about the 'tummy button' position.
Paws, Black eyed cream satin demonstrates his scent glands (the fur has been blown apart to see them more clearly)

Hope this helps allay some worries over these.
So do syrians have scent glands on their bellies too ?

If anyone notices there hammy is doing there very own itchy and scratchy show with back legs scratching her hind quarters alot and she has noticeable 2cm/3cm dark patches around her glands, almost looks like shes going bald and because of this some owners mistake this for mites its not! Shes mire than likely got inflamed scent glands and 'Metacam' antimflamity does the job to treat it.
Mine goes made marking when i take her property out her cage and shes out n about, she also marks me on both my legs!

No they don't. Only dwarf species have a ventral scent gland. The Syrian scent glands are on the hips.

This is not necessarily the case and treating hamster with metacam unnecessarily is not a good idea. The usually scratch at them to get the scent on their paws and this lets them spread it further around. When the scent glands excrete a lot of scent the area gets greasy and the fur can look thin over them. It also gets barer with age. Metacam can affect the kidneys so it should be reserved for genuine need under a vets advice. If you are worried about any coat or gland issues then see an experienced vet.
