Default Hamster cleaning ?

Hey my hamster has a truff of hair that looks like something got into it? Can I clean this spot and how I know they usually do sand baths but this seems like it might need more work. Is this something I need to worry about or is it just something got into his fur. He has had that for a day or 2 now.

That looks like his scent gland to me, they can look a bit greasy sometimes so nothing to worry about, he may just have been scent marking a lot.

Agree with cypher, I think he is just scent marking. It's early days with him and if I remember rightly you had to swop his cage over, so he is just marking his territory.

Definitely agree scent gland, are you over cleaning so he feels that he needs to rub his scent around, if not it will settle when he feels secure and can smell himself everywhere, he is lovely

If it was me I don't clean their cages out for the first week or 2 when I first get my hamsters, and with Twinkle I left it a month as he was such a scaredy cat. You could maybe go a week and not touch anything and see how that goes, then build up to a spot clean 2 to 3 times a week. Cleaning every day can cause you more work and maybe why your hamster is scent marking a lot.

I just wanted to mention the poop, it's ok to leave it in the cage, it's dry and doesn't smell and they eat some of it (like rabbits) it's necessary and perfectly normal

Yup, scent glands, all normal..you may sometimes see a dark spot under on the skin if they get really wet around it.

This may make some of you gasp but I actually do just a full clean... monthly! I use quite thick substrate of horse bedding that is cardboard based..he poops in his house but as the layer iis deep it is never mouldy or smelly when i come to cleaning.. ive found the more often you clean, the stinkier they get as they keep marking
