Syrian Health Log Book?
Hi all! Long time no talk!!
So, just yesterday I got my second hamster, a long haired syrian, a gorgeous little girl.
One thing I regret not doing with Monty (my first - a robo) was making a health log book to keep track of his health etc.
I plan on making one for Kekoa my Syrian, but I'm not sure how much I should be recording?? Any advice?

Re: Syrian Health Log Book?
In some ways choosing exact things to record for health books and such with pets will vary depending on what an individual owner wants to do. However, there are some very good basic things to do. Things like weight, eating, basic health check info(eyes, ears, nose, etc - not necessary things to check daily but once a week or even every other week can be helpful), and any illnesses that do pop up would be what I would focus on most.
If you had the space in the book for it you could also add lists of favorite safe toys, veg, treats, etc. This isn't extremely important but it can definitely be useful to have on hand!

I think the main thing is to keep a record of weight, you could also record any slight changes in health or behaviour that might just be of slight concern to see if they progress or diminish over time, a record of any vet visits & treatment if ever needed & any changes you make to things like food or substrate might be useful.

Thank you for your reply! One thing I'm not sure how to record is eating. Any recommendations on how to monitor that would be great!
I actually got a set of scales to use for her delivered today! I plan on trying to do her first home health check tonight
The list of favourites is a fantastic idea! Definately need to do that!!

That's all fantastic, thank you, I'll definately log those! Thank you so much, I'm going to start collating what to include soon and I've started writing pretty much EVERYTHING for this first week, so I know if theres any major behaviour fluctuations at the very start
One thing I need to figure out better is the weight I'd want her to be. I'm still not sure just how old she is (we forgot to ask when we got her) so I need to go back and ask! As if I remember right it sometimes varies on age, but I'm not 100% sure

Re: Syrian Health Log Book?
I wouldn’t worry too much about what weight she should be as hamsters do vary a lot, if she’s still young then she will gain weight for a while but it should level off & then the main thing is just to check that it remains stable, hams rarely become over weight unless fed inappropriate foods so the main thing is to keep an eye out for weight loss.
Have a look at the hamster weigh in thread to get some idea of the normal weight range.
