Live moss on a cage?
Hi! For the past week I've been triying fo find moss to fill the gaps of the bendy bridges and to give to my hamster as a bedding material. I've read a few times that reptile moss can be dangerous if they eat it so I've been looking in gardening stores and I bought a plate of live moss that hasn't been trated with any pesticides but I've seen it has little tiny bugs or insects in it so I haven't used it yet. Is it safe to use? if not, what should I be looking for?

No, don't use it. You don't want any bugs in your hamster's habitat. Give him torn up strips of plain white toilet paper for nesting material instead. They like that and its safe.
Rodipet does a snuggle moss which is considered to be safe and i have bought it but my hamsters don't like it much. In fact, one hamster chucked it out of his coconut.

Agree. If you want to cover the bendy bridge, I find a piece of hemp mat is good. It covers the gaps and the whole bridge, so also softens a landing if they happen to fall on it from a height.

Re: Live moss on a cage?
Thanks so much! I've seen the Rodipet's moss but shipping is more expensive than the moss plate so I'll have to save up some money to make a bigger order.
I live in Spain and right now its sooo hot and my hamster is not using the toilet paper, he just ignores it so I don't know what to give him for bedding.
I'll look for the hemp mat, tbh I don't know what it is but thanks so much guys for your help ^^

For heat you could add another sand bath with a hide

I did add a glass container with sand and a little plant pot a couple weeks ago and I leave it in the fridge for half an hour a couple times per day but he just uses it a new and bigger toilet
I also changed the bedding in half of his cage to coconut soil and he seems to enjoy it a ton as he sleeps in that area like 90% of the time so I hope this helps him with the heat, we are around 30ºC every single day and it really worries me!
Thanks for your help! ^^

Re: Live moss on a cage?
Half of the cage being coconut soil is way too much. Hopefully it is 100% coconut fiber too - any additives to that would make it unsuitable as well, but you really need to remove a significant portion of that or your cage will end up having too much humidity which is a very bad thing with hamsters as they can end up with respiratory issues due to overly high humidity and such!
The temperature outside the cage being more stable would really be the best solution, so finding a safe solution outside the cage to keep temperatures at a safe and consistent temperature or temperature range would be a much better choice long term.

Do you think half of the cage is too much because of the humidity or is there any other reason?
I used the trixie coconut soil, the product description says it's 100% organic and it hasn't been treated with any fertilizers but it's sterilized. I also let the coconut soil dry before using it so it's not wet but its still colder than the paper. Either way i'll put the digital thermomether inside the cage and i'll see if theres any diference in humidity inside the cage compared to the outside, I hope it's fine because he is really enjoying it.
I built a new smaller cage (it's still above the minimun size) a month ago so he can be in the coldest place in the house during the hotest months and he is now using his weel more often and beeing a little bit more active than at the start of june so i think it's worth it. I also made an upgrade to that cage this weekend and now the front instead of beign just methacrylate is half methacrylate and half mesh so the ventilation is way better and it dosen't get hotter and hotter inside as the day goes by.

The thing with coconut soil it has a natural level of humidity and damp substrates can lead to mould and fungus etc . A little bit on one area for interesting texture/variety could be ok but generally it’s better not to use any kind of soul and keep to dry substrates.
