Eye injury and surgery
Hello. It’s been a horrible day today. We took Beaker to have his long incisor burred on Friday. Friday evening and yesterday he was making lots of squeaking sounds, not usual for him, and rushing around, not eating, seemed to have problems putting bedding in his pouches. We thought he was just a bit freaked out and maybe had a cold. We fed him some soaked oats and broke food up small for him and he ate those.
This morning his right eye is protruding a lot and dry, whole right side of his face is swollen, and on top. My daughter really didn’t want me to take him back to the vet we saw on Friday so I drove an hour to the only exotic vet which was open. They’ve given him 4 days of painkillers and antibiotics (to rub on the eye) and said it’s likely they’ll have to remove it on Thursday.
Just horrible and a big shock and I can’t help thinking it’s to do with his trip to the vet last week - it seems too much of a coincidence.

Re: Eye injury and surgery
Do you know what caused his tooth to become long in the first place, I'm just wondering if he had an underlying condition that is possibly causing all this new stuff.

Re: Eye injury and surgery
Apparently he is missing one lower tooth, so it doesn’t grind down against it. But it’s also growing crooked, so perhaps. It looks as if his face is swollen, pushing the eye out (sorry), not really just bruised. But I don’t know enough about it to know I suppose.

Umm, I'm not really sure then, probably best to see how it is by thrusday and see what the vet says.

Re: Eye injury and surgery
I'm so sorry to hear that Beaker is going through all this.
I would most definitely take him to an exotic vet.
If it means that he has to have his eye removed, it isn't the worst thing that can happen to a hamster. They don't see very well to begin with and don't use their eyesight as much as their other senses. I had a lovely rescue hamster who lost an eye to a cat attack and was then abandoned before coming to us and he managed just fine with only one eye.
I think the exotic vet may need to x-ray Beaker to see what's going on but it should all be OK.
Sending you guys best wishes.
