Lump on hamsters throat.
So, my hamster Henry has a lump on the top of his throat that started about a week or so ago, but he was still acting fine and running around and whatnot. This past week hes starting to struggle when hes walking and is dragging his back legs a little. I was just wondering if anyone knew possibly what this could be? A few people have said it could be a abscess or a tumour but I dont know the difference and I wanted to know that if he was in pain what should I do?
He has a vet appt this afternoon at 3pm so until then I've just got to wait around.

Re: Lump on hamsters throat.
That looks to be a nasty abscess maybe from a tooth root. They may well have to knock him out to drain it and then flush it out. I'd expect he will need antibiotics. I'd suspect an abscess rather than a tumour as it has come up so suddenly and hopefully they will be able to clear it up for you. Good luck this afternoon and let us know how he does.

Thank you for getting back to me! It turns out that they want to operate on him on Monday morning to remove the lump. They said that at the rate its growing it's not a good sign and could possibly be cancer but they won't know until they've removed it and checked it over. So fingers crossed it all goes well on Monday 🤞🏼

Oh goodness that isn't good news. I hope things go well on Monday though it does seem a long wait. Did they give any antibiotics in case it is an abscess?

That's what I thought, for it to be something that could be so serious it's a very long wait for him. They didnt no, it felt like the vet was waffling quite a bit and even he was unsure what it was. But also he's no longer a young hamster so I'm worried that he might not manage the surgery that well 😥

Re: Lump on hamsters throat.
I really think the vet should've given you antibiotics as it's a long wait for his operation. I would phone the vet and ask for antibiotics and if he can operate sooner. I've got my fingers crossed for you and your ham.
