Exclamation Hamster Tank Issues

Came home to see little black sugar ants crawling around in Hamilton's tank, and his eye looks scratched (do sugar ants bite???) I cleaned out EVERYTHING and made sure there's no bugs or anything like that. Any ideas on how to keep the bugs out of the hamster tanks??? Is there any serious issue with Hamilton's eye???
