Default balding

I’ve had my long haired syrian for a few months and i’m noticing he is getting a couple bald spots on his back. It doesn’t seem to bother him and he doesn’t itch it a lot. I freeze everything before I give it to him to get rid of any mites or bugs. Why is this??

What kind of wheel does he have? If the wheel has a spindle and isn't big enough it can rub the back and wear the fur off. Even an 8" wheel could do that with a long haired syrian.

It is better to have a wheel without a centre spindle for a long haired syrian too, for safety reasons.

If it isn't the wheel then could it be some other item in his cage that his back is rubbing on? eg an entrance hole to a house or other toy that could be a bit small? Entrance holes for syrians need to be at least 6cm diameter really. Even plastic tubes on hamster cages can be a bit small, even if 6cm diameter, as they are rigid and long haired hamsters are bulkier. A hamster with full pouches can easily be 6cm wide or more! Rat sized tunnels work best for syrians.
