Female Hamsters Have Cycles???
Hi,
I got my hamster on March 31st, 2019, and I have no clue how old she is. I know she is juvenile. But that's all I know, because I forgot to ask the pet store how old she is (oops!). Anyway, I was reading a thread recently, and it said something about their bums can get sticky in their cycle. So, female hamsters have cycles?! If yes, when do they start? Do I know when she's in her cycle? Do I need to do anything special for her when she's in her cycle?
Thanks!!

Re: Female Hamsters Have Cycles???
Of course they do! Not like humans tho, the "sticky bum" is just a bit of extra discharge and isn't anything you need to be concerned about. Some hams don't have that at all. Some smell a bit more, some don't. Some seem to get a lot more active or "destructive", some don't. Easiest way to tell is that if you pet her body, particularly along her hips she will freeze and raise her tail. It's a mating instinct.
They'll start going into heat pretty young, I'm not the expert to ask here but you'd separate males and females from as young as 4 weeks so by the time you got Creampuff she would already be having heat cycles.

Re: Female Hamsters Have Cycles???
Female hamsters go into heat roughly every four days. I have 3 female Russian hybrids and apart from the smell, the only difference in behaviour is they become more active (especially Stormy). Occasionally Flurry’s scent gland will also get a bit sticky (especially now I have male Russian dwarfs too).

Re: Female Hamsters Have Cycles???
Another quick question: Does their urine smell more when they're in their cycle? Because I think mine does, because every so often I can smell it, but other times I can't.
Thanks!

Re: Female Hamsters Have Cycles???
My female syrian definitely has more of an odour when she's on heat, and her wee smells different and is a bit more pungent I'm used to the smell but sometimes I get an especially large waft that puts me off my lunch! I've also noticed on some cycles she doesn't smell different at all, so I think it just depends! I mostly notice changes in her behaviour too with her having a lot more energy and scent marking things more often.
