Is it diabetes? No glucose high ketones
I tested my Russian dwarf (Winter) and the results were high ketones and no glucose. Does he have diabetes? I used the KETO diastix strips.

I feed him hazel hamster, oats, broccoli, millet, no sugar. He seems healthy, I just don’t see him go on his wheel.
Is there anything else I can do? Or is he fine?
Thanks.

Re: Is it diabetes? No glucose high ketones
He may well be diabetic, there's a thread here that explains a bit about the what to do depending on the various different levels of ketones & glucose.
So you think your hamster is diabetic
And Vectis has some info on her website that should be helpful too.

It really needs a vet diagnosis to be sure. Although in my view no glucose suggests no diabetes. Does your hammy have any particular symptoms?

Thanks for your reply,
He is quite healthy, no symptoms, besides being a little less active, he seems fine.

Re: Is it diabetes? No glucose high ketones
Jerusaleum artichoke root is meant to be good for controlling and preventing diabetes, I think Rodipet sell it. Fair warning though, it does smell pretty bad.

Re: Is it diabetes? No glucose high ketones
What were the symptoms that prompted you to test your hamster?
Diabetic hamsters test positive for glucose, which is not the case in your lad I would not recommend making dietary changes for diabetes or adding herbal diabetes supplements without a diabetes diagnosis.
High ketones can have many causes, for example not eating. I would suggest testing again, ideally when your hamster has been awake and active for a while and therefore is likely to have eaten. If your hamster is unwell or the ketones persist with no clear cause then speak to your vet.
ETA: My website is being updated at the moment so the diabetes page will have more detail in future to include this

Thanks for your reply!
I was worried about him because he gained some weight. I’m glad it’s not diabetes, yet I will test him again, like you said, after he has eaten. And no dietary changes.
