Re: Drinking a lot
They do often drink more as they get older & the kidneys don't function so well but if it's been a sudden change it could be a sign of a UTI.

Re: Drinking a lot
Thank you cypher. It is quite sudden. Does that need antibiotics? He is still ok in himself and chirpy enough.

Re: Drinking a lot
A UTI would need antibiotics, might be worth getting him checked out just in case, you could try to get a pee sample, there's usually protein in the urine with a UTI but it's not a completely certain way to tell.

Re: Drinking a lot
Thank you cypher. He has just swapped from peeing in his sand bath to I don't know where exactly which makes getting a sample a bit challenging. He was bright and chirpy again last night and did plenty of running around so I'm reassured he's still feeling ok but I will take him to the vets next week to have him checked out. He's still drinking loads. He has a bowl not a bottle because when j adopted him he had a bad and noisy habit of chewing his water spout which was hurting his mouth and he's drinking a third of the bowl in a night now instead of it hardly showing how much he's drunk

Re: Drinking a lot
It's great that he's still fine in himself herbi, hopefully it's nothing too much to worry about.
Getting a urine sample can be a bit tricky & you can't take pee from the cage as it will be contaminated, you have to put them in a clean plastic box or something & collect it from there.

Re: Drinking a lot
It's been warm this week so more of the water could also have evaporated off the bowl. Not that you're not already doing the right thing in being cautious and getting him checked out but just a thing to consider.

Re: Drinking a lot
Thanks cypher and shannonmcn. He seems to be drinking normally again. There was no sign of anything wrong so perhaps just a uti. He's still his normal chirpy self anyway and that's what I like to see!

Re: Drinking a lot
I think it's par for the course in older Syrians. Their kidneys and other organs gradually get a bit worn out. So they tend to drink and pee more when the kidneys are ageing. If he seems well in himself I wouldn't worry about it.
