Urinary tract infection
Hello. Our Tali has a UTI and currently on Baytril oral solution. Initially thought she might possibly have diarrhoea but another trip to vets yesterday confirmed this. What causes UTI in hamsters? Hopefully our little lady will back to herself again soon.

Re: Urinary tract infection
I’m so sorry to hear about Tali! I’ve heard UTI can be very uncomfortable. That’s good that you got some medicine. I’m not sure what causes UTI in hams but hopefully someone else can help you. Best wishes with Tali.

Re: Urinary tract infection
UTIs are pretty common in hamsters, I think because bacteria can easily enter their bodies via the urethra, just from when they move around so close to the ground. The bladder can then get infected.
Anyway fingers crossed for Tali! I hope she’s feeling okay and pulls through quickly.

Re: Urinary tract infection
Thank you Sasha04 and mangoandmimi for information and well wishes. When I searched on UTI I could see about symptoms but not the reason behind it. That makes sense as hamsters are very close to the ground! We hope Tali gets better soon-her fur is very messy at the moment and she looks a sorry state but thankfully her eyes are bright and she's eating and drinking her meds secretly hidden in her water as advised by the vet
