Default Excessive grooming possibly..

Hi. We are worried about our female Syrian hamster (about 6/7 months old - guess as adopted). About the last couple of weeks every time Tali wakes up with her fur looking wet all around her scent glands and on sides of body and some of her belly but isn't wet when we touch her fur. Tali hasn't got diarraheoa as her poos look normal in the cage. She is eating and drinking fine. We have done one complete clean out and its happened after this but this was weeks ago (this was after 3 months of being with us). We only spot clean the cage and haven't changed any bedding or substrate. Tali seems content and happy with bundles of energy. What is it? an allergic reaction to food maybe? Any thoughts / ideas would help as we think she might need to see a vet if doesn't go away. We also wondered if she is rolling around in her pee? Don't think its mites as not scratching.

I'm no expert but first thing that came to mind was does Tali have a sandbath? Perhaps the "wetness" is greasy fur if you say it's not wet to touch? I wouldn't be too worried if she's eating/drinking fine and not scratching herself and if her skin isn't red/inflamed - doesn't sounds like allergies or anything
Hope this is of some use! Apologies if it's totally useless!

Scent glands can and do get very wet looking sometimes as they scent mark, and the oil will spread around the fur. Has anything else changed? It tends to get worse after cage clean outs, environment change, etc. If her fur is getting very oily you can always wipe it clean. I very much doubt she’s rolling around in pee and mites you’d see some hair loss.

Hi Pumpkinspice92 and mangoandmimi. Thank you for your responses. Tali has a sandbath that she uses and she does scent mark quite a bit especially in her playpen. Early this morning before work Tali was up and about looking wet on her fur again and stomach and her bottom looked very brown like diarrhoea (we haven't seen this until today). Decided that Tali needed to see a vet in case wet tail.
Have just come back from the vets, am very upset and extremely worried. We've used the vets before and they were great with our last hamster. Today's visit was very stressful. Tali bit the vet badly causing a lot blood but more worrying Tali leapt from the vets hands and fell a fair height onto hard floor. This happened twice. Myself and vet are concerned could be internal injuries, I need to contact the vets to give them an update. Due to this Tali wasn't examined so will try and get photos of her under side for vet.

Tali is in her bed at the moment and seems ok, she took a couple of mealworms and wasn't hobbling. I am aware as prey animals they hide their pain. I am hoping and praying she will be fine. I am so upset at the moment and feel guilty for ever taking her to the vets now, but I did it as me and my partner were so worried she had possibly wet tail.

If anything happens to Tali I don't think I'll be ever able to forgive myself. We love her dearly.

Oh no, that can’t have been a pleasant experience. I hope Talis internals are okay. It’s very unlikely Tali has wet tail given her age and that there has been no sudden changes. She might well have diarrhea in which case she does need to be seen by a vet again really - not to mention the falls. Have you fed her any differently? The main thing now is to make sure she’s hydrated.

Thanks mangoandmimi. We have a feeling its diarrhoea. Tali has a vet appointment on Saturday and tomorrow I'm contacting the vets tomorrow to give an update on how she is doing.
Currently she is up and in her playpen, walking more than running - is a little shocked and bruised most likely.
We're upset too as Tali was beginning to trust us and we're worried now that it will set her back to how we were a couple of months ago.

We're making sure she's drinking and we've seen her drink this evening. Fingers crossed she'll be ok and no internal injuries. Vet advised that next 24-48 hours are the danger zone. Food wise not any changes the vet advised just smaller pieces of vegetables/fruit and less often . We were giving Tali a piece every day the size of a thumbnail but maybe she can't handle that.

Thanks again for your message.
