Default Bald patch on one side

Hi everyone,

A few days a go we noticed a bald patch on our female Syrian Hamster right where her scent gland is. It’s only on one side but it’s weird because it seemed to have appeared quite quickly. She is acting herself and eating fine so we assume it’s nothing serious but just wanted some advice in case there is anything we could do.

Thanks!

It sounds as though she's most likely been rubbing against something, either scent marking or maybe something in the cage has a slightly rough edge she's rubbing against or a tube or hole in something that's a bit small, it does seem a bit odd it should just be on one side but I would watch to see if you can spot her rubbing that side & check the cage for anything that might be rough.

Wheel? Sometimes they can get wheel rub on one side. Has she got a different wheel or grown bigger recently? What wheel have you got? I think comfort wheels can be known for this.

Thank you so much for your replies!

She loves to mark her scent and I see her rubbing herself against things most evenings but I thought it was both sides that she rubbed. I may be wrong. She has the Barney cage and uses the wheel that came with it (a blue plastic one). We have noticed that she has grown so maybe it is too small for her. How would I tell if she needs a bigger wheel? Also if it is from rubbing will the fur grow back or does she have a permanent bald patch now?

It could well be the wheel, her back should be completely straight when she runs, if she's bending her back it's too small.
I don't know what size that wheel is but most fully grown syrians need a 10-12" wheel.
There's a guide to wheels here that might be helpful.
Guide to suitable hamster Wheels
If it's just from rubbing then her fur should grow back once the cause is removed.

Thank you for the help. We have ordered her a 29cm wheel so that may improve the bald patch but if not at least she has a good sized wheel.
I can’t wait to see her try it!

It's been about a week since we put her new wheel in (which she loves) but I have not noticed any improvement on the bald patch. It is still only on one side and I don't think it has grown but it doesn't look like it has started to grow back either.

I am attaching some photos. Sorry they aren't really clear but she doesn't sit still! Hopefully they will give you more of an idea of what I am talking about.

Thank you!

From the picture the bald patch to me looks like her scent gland. They do have scent glands on both sides but sometimes one looks more noticeable as this could be the side she use more rub more of her scent on. So everything looks fine to me.

It looks as though it's just the scent gland to me too & nothing to be concerned about.
