diabetes ?

Hi all.

my recently rescued dwarf hamster girl is very inactive. she spends most of her time in bed apart from coming out to eat drink and pee. sometimes she walks on her wheel for a few mins (never runs). Im not sure how old she is but she is quite over wight my guess is shes quite old.

Im slightly worried about her and want to give her the best possible life however long she has left.

apart from spending most of her time in bed she seems pretty happy and eats and drinks regularly. dose anyone think this sound like diabetes ?

If not how shall i go about getting her to lose wight or shall i not bother seeing as I think she is quite old and not not sure how long she has left.
will her losing wight make her more active or is this just how she is being an older hammy ?

I'm not too sure if it sounds like diabetes, but depending on how long you've had your ham it could well just be a combination of your hamsters age and the stress of moving into a new environment. You may find that after a while she starts coming out more, or she may just be embracing her retirement and taking it easy as she's getting older.

If she's not drinking & peeing a lot then it's unlikely to be diabetes.
If she's quite old then that would be normal behaviour for an elderly hamster.
If I remember rightly you haven't had her long so she may still be adjusting to her new home.
Don't cut back on food if she seems overweight, just feed her a good mix but don't give much in the way of treats that are high in fats like seeds & nuts.

thank you very much. i brought her the burgess dwarf mix today she seems to like it. this puts my mind at rest thank you.

Good to hear she's enjoying her mix, she should do fine on that.
It's difficult when you don't know their exact age but even if she is older I'm sure she'll enjoy her retirement time with you
