Default overgrown nails. how do you get them back to normal again?

my hammy ellis is an old man and i have just spotted his nails are too long and curling round. i trimmed them all back so they are not bending round but they seem to be damaged now and look thickened and are sticking up in the air. i think he must be slowing down and his coat has also thinned. he is just over 2 years old now. what can i do to try and get his nails back to normal? they are very thick and yellow compaired to my other hamsters neat little nails.
i have never had this problem with a hamster before. any advice welcomed! x

I have the same thing with Comet who is an old man now.

He used to have lovely little rounded nails, now I have to cut 'em ALL the time, honestly they are growing like mad!

And they are yellow and stick up too, they dont seem to bother him so I just think it like people nails, coz old people nails are a bit gross too!

I wouldnt worry hun x

I'm going through this with my Syrian too - although she's still fairly young and a maniac, so making trimming verrrrrry hard.

She has one nail thats gone curled on her little finger on her right paw. I cant get near it to cut it or file it...and when i gave up with the nail file cheeky Mo yanked it out of my hands and ran off with it to hide it! Think she'd had enough too!

I dont know what to do...I cant hold her to cut it...I have put a terracotta pot in as her sand bath in the hope that it will wear it down, but dunno if its gone too far for that
