Hamster suddenly itching
Hello!
The last couple of days I’ve noticed my ten months old Syrian hamster Martina scratching herself very often. I didn’t change anything in her cage, same bedding, food, toys etc. The only other pet in the house is another hamster Lemon, who has come from the same breeder and lives here for almost two months already, completely fine.
The only new thing that happened lately is that two days ago my stepfather flew in for a visit. He touched Marti only after washing his hands though. He also smokes, but does it in a different room with windows open.
I’ve checked Marti’s skin for irritation but didn’t find anything apart from a mole that she has had for awhile.
Could someone please help me understand what could be causing her itching?

Re: Hamster suddenly itching
If there's no dryness, flaking, or irritation, I wouldn't worry yourself too much. Just keep an eye on her. Monitor how often she's itching, and if it worsens, or she shows symptoms of irritation/a problem, you may want to investigate further or consult your vet For now, just keep an eye on her

Re: Hamster suddenly itching
Has anything stressed her out at all over the Christmas period, new things going on could have upset her & that could cause it or anything new in the cage at all, new toys, treats or anything?
I would just keep an eye on her for now if she seems fine otherwise & see how she goes.

Re: Hamster suddenly itching
Drago, thank you! I’ll be watching her carefully!
cypher, nothing new apart from my stepfather, whom she has never met, and who smells of tobacco probably. Also there were some arguing going on yesterday, but she had started itching before that. Do you think a new person in the house who also smokes could cause that?

Re: Hamster suddenly itching
I really doubt one new person, even one who smokes would make any difference tbh so I wouldn't worry about that, just see how she goes for now, let us know if it doesn't get any better.
