Re: Keeping hamsters warm in winter
They’re a bit safer than fan heaters I think and v low on electricity usage. We use on for the in between times when it starts to get chilly but not quite cold enough to have the heating on (although it’s on now!)
Particularly for older or frailer hams during sub zero temperatures at night. I have a snuggle sage too but don’t find it much use once it gets to November.

Re: Keeping hamsters warm in winter
Great advice thank you. I live in a new built flat but it does still get very cold. I don't have a microwave to put the snuggle safe pads in but I was thinking of maybe buying one of the radiators even though we do have central heating. Does anyone please have another link the heaters as the one above does not seem to work anymore?

Re: Keeping hamsters warm in winter
This is the one I have. There are cheaper ones but these are good re safety cut outs etc and it has been very reliable. No leaks. We have the bigger one of the these as well which costs more than twice as much! The little one is fine to take the chill off a room They have to be "primed" before use - ie leave it on full temperature constantly for a day in a ventilated room to burn off any manufacturing smells. The smell isn't nice, but once burned off it is a very good heater. It took longer than the instructions said for the smell to burn off.

In a small room it will warm the room nicely but not too much (and there are temperature settings for adjusting). In a larger or high ceilinged room it will never full warm a room but it will stop it getting too cold - if that makes sense. Which is not a bad thing as hamsters can get too hot as well! Although I have never found that a problem except on extremely hot days in summer. As long as the room is no more than 20 degrees it's fine.

Re: Keeping hamsters warm in winter
I had it in a small, well insulated room, on a timer last winter - to come on for a few hours in the middle of the night in between the heating going off at night and coming on in the morning. Our hammies are now in a large room and I need to leave it on most of the night to make any difference on a cold night. So will be using the larger heater on a timer instead . So room size does make a difference.

Re: Keeping hamsters warm in winter
That's great, thank you. The room is only quite small so that heater looks like it will do the trick.

Re: Keeping hamsters warm in winter
Thank you for reviving this thread. I was already going to hassle my dad to get the radiator out of the shed for my room but the question is where to position the radiator. Does 4 feet from the cage sound reasonable and safe? I know that we should keep enclosures away from drafts and radiators but they never detail what distance is ok.
(I think this room is cold. Goodness, I think this whole bungalow is cold when the heating is off! As a result I want the radiator close enough to be effective but not so close that it is uncomfortable.)

Re: Keeping hamsters warm in winter
Could something as simple as giving extra bedding be useful? Im currently waiting to have my windows replaced as they're not very good and it gets really cold throughout the house. So keep putting the heating up isn't a option as I'm literally throwing my money out the window
