The Vets
So I'm going to be taking my hamster to the vets soon. I'm thinking about taking him in his ball so is this a good idea? Also I'm worried he'll get scared by the whole experience. He's really old now but he hasn't met anyone knew in a while so I'm not sure how he will respond to meeting the vet. Also I'm worried about other animals in the waiting room and him getting frightened of them.

Re: The Vets
You need a pet carrier to take your ham to the vet, there area a few different ones but something like this.
Put a good layer of substrate in the base to keep your ham comfortable & warm, I usually put my carrier in a large bag which helps keep it darker inside without blocking the air flow, this will help in the waiting room too if there are other animals, noise & bright lights which can be stressful.
Hope it goes ok at the vet, it can be a bit stressful for them but if you have a good vet who knows how to handle hams then it shouldn't be too much for your ham.

I'm taking my hamster to the vets tomorrow so I don't have time to buy a carrier. Will a ball be okay for this one trip?

Re: The Vets
I really don't think a ball is safe to transport a hamster anywhere & being confined in a ball at the vets & while travelling would probably be very stressful.
If you really can't get a proper carrier (if you have any pet shops near you they would most likely have something) then a strong cardboard box or even a box inside another box (in case of chewing) with some substrate & air holes punched in the top might be ok.

Re: The Vets
Do you have any small (about 30cm square) plastic storage boxes? You can make some holes in the lid and fill with plenty bedding so he can dig down and feel safe.
The ball is too small and he will not feel safe in there and if he panics he might hurt himself. I'm sure you will be able to find a plastic box or even take him in his cage if you have a lift to the vets. I hope he gets on OK.

Re: The Vets
Thank you everyone for your help, I took him in a cardboard box with some holes cut in the lid. I put some sawdust and bedding in there and he spent the whole time there making his bed. At first, when he met the vet he was a bit grumpy with her (she'd woken him up from a nap) but he seemed to be okay with the experience as once she put him back in the box he went back to sleep.
