Blood Spotted in Cage
I was just giving my hybrid hamster Mimo a meal worm and noticed some little spots of dried blood. He sometimes bites so initially I thought it might be mine, but I spot cleaned yesterday and he hasnt bitten be since. I haven't given him a super thorough look over yet as he's not very keen on being handled but thus far I haven't seen any dried blood on him or any scabs/wet marks.
His behaviour hasn't changed at all and I can't contact a vet until tomorrow morning. Does anyone have any suggestions on anything I can do in the mean time?

Re: Blood Spotted in Cage
Are you sure it's blood? Is there anything in the cage that could have stained the bedding at all?
He may just have scratched himself, are his nails ok & not too long?
Check everything in the cage to make sure nothing has any sharp edges that he could catch himself on, no wooden houses/toys with tacks in, or anything with entrance holes that may be too small.
If you can't see any blood on him then just keep an eye out & see how he goes.

Re: Blood Spotted in Cage
The only sharp bits are on the exterior of the lid which are inaccessible to him entirely. There is a little wooden wheelbarrel that has some little nails in it though they aren't exposed- I've removed it for now. I'm hoping he just scratched himself with his claws- they don't seem to be too long but he does scratch pretty intensely sometimes.

Re: Blood Spotted in Cage
Hopefully it is just a scratch but iIf you see any more try to check him over, if he doesn't like being handled you could try putting him in a large glass jar or container of some kind so you can get a look underneath, if it continues & you can't tell where it's from then it would be a good idea to get your vet to check him over.

Re: Blood Spotted in Cage
I've sent emails to all the local vets to ask their costs and if some of them even treat hamsters. In the morning I also am going to ask a family friend who breeds hamsters ehat her opinion is. I saw a bit more after checking up on his at 4am- one partial paw print and a sort of smudge on his wheel

Re: Blood Spotted in Cage
Quick question...is Mimo definitely a 'he'?
Was thinking it might be something gynecologically related in which case you may not see where it is coming from. Just a thought.

Re: Blood Spotted in Cage
I actually suspected he might be a girl for a while. I just had him in a glass container to look for blood or injuries though and he is indeed a boy. That scent gland startled me for a second though!
I couldn't find any scabs or cuts but his little armpits and a bit of his chest have slightly less hair and look a bit raw.

Re: Blood Spotted in Cage
Update: he will be going to visit a family friend who happens to be a specialized small pet vet and hamster breeder to make sure everything is a-ok specifically with the armpit thing. Since the blood on the wheel incident there has only been a single spot about the size of the tip of a pin. I do believe it was just a scratch but am keeping a close eye on him. I added a layer of white bedding to his cage so it will be very clear if it happens again.

Re: Blood Spotted in Cage
Update:
Mimo is a-okay after a vet visit. Turns out Mimo is a girl but has a male-sized scent gland and no visible nipples! They might be intersex but without taking a look at their internally we won't know for sure. For now I will be using they/them pronouns because I think it fits and Mimo is a hamster who doesn't have a concept of gender.
They have a small cut on a front paw but no other injury was found. It could be blood from their vulva and I'm going to continue to keep an eye on everything.
