Re: Cushings and Treatment
Its tough cuz live in a small Northern town with the nearest vet who sees exotics 1.5 hrs away. there sadly are no exotics vets in my region. Most of the vets here won’t even see pets other than dogs and cats.
The vet I go to is reasonably knowledgeable about small animals and the 2nd vet is her loving and he comes from a bigger city. He comes up once a month and he’s even more knowledgeable.
My hamster just turned one in April. I did start a thread on her earlier but no replies so while I was waiting for replies I started searching the forum

Re: Cushings and Treatment
Hi Ami. Vetoryl is not actually licensed for Hamsters - just for dogs I think. It shouldn’t be given without a confirmed diagnosis from a vet via blood test and the vet would decide in the dosage (which would be tiny). Please don’t medicate your hammy yourself. If you start a new thread about the medical concerns for your hammy we can make a few suggestions. Cushings is actually supposed to be quite rare in hamsters and many symptoms can be caused by other things. Let us know what problems your hammy is having and how old he/she is - there may be other causes or solutions for any symptoms. Most vets can’t take blood from hamsters as they have such tiny veins so diagnosis can be a range of other symptoms. But symptoms like hair loss can also be other things.

Re: Cushings and Treatment
Ami, if you look back to my original post, you will read in the third paragraph, the dose that my vet prescribed for my hamster with Cushings. However, as Serendipity said, this was prescribed by my vet who is an exotics specialist and he can both take blood from a hamster and has developed this treatment. It is a highly diluted measure of the dog treatment and nowhere near as strong as you ask in your post above. Please be very careful.

Re: Cushings and Treatment
Thank you so much guys..I'm newly hearing abt this diesease and was curious to see if there's any cure at all..I was panicking about my hamster losing all hair and getting no vets to help in my area..was frantically searching for an option and even registered in this forum as a last hope..I really didn't want to medicate my hammy myself..especially after knowing how delicate a hamster can be..bt I was really panicking and wanted to gather all information possible taking notes just in case needed..i anyways couldnt find any way to buy vetoryl and just wanted to know what mg of it to dilute.in original post the diluting part is understood but what mg of it should be diluted in the first place was not clear to me.but anyways I dont want to try anything like that for my Rambo myself..i was just panicking. lm trying to find an exotic pet specialist in my area and I live in India where it's impossible to find one.bt I'll anyways not risk it.as of now he seems healthy but with extreme hair loss..the local vet prescribed an antifungal cream.so I'll be patient and hope and pray that it is not Cushings as there is no way to get a hormonal test for diagnosis in my state itself..anyway thank you guys for the reply.ill keep updated in case of any progress.im hoping it's just mange and not Cushings.

Re: Cushings and Treatment
I hope it isn't as well. The majority of vets can't do the diagnosis and wouldn't know about prescribing vetoryl. Even then it depends on the type of Cushings - Vetoryl is only for one type (there is the type from the pituitary glands and a different type from the adrenal glands - it could also be a caused by a tumour on the adrenal glands). So there is only one type that Vetoryl helps.
I think one way to look at it is, that as hammies get older they do develop some kind of disease usually - their organs start to fail and often the kidneys can be first. But they can live their lives reasonably comfortably. If you see signs of suffering like a lot of sores or just generally they seem in pain, then that is the time to think about possibly helping them on their way if there is no treatment. Another common symptom of Cushings is a pot belly. It isn't just fur loss. Just give him lots of tlc and see how he goes.
