Default Heart Pounding :-(

Yesterday I noticed that Lilbear was behaving a bit strangely again. She was moving around her cage very slowly and seemed a bit spaced out. She was breathing really hard and it was like her heart was constantly pounding! She is still with us this morning but she is still breathing really hard.

This sort of behaviour happened before back in October of this year and I really thought that at that time she would pass. I've not had this with other hamsters - any ideas, anyone?

I think she is struggling with old age now suga. Sometimes they can get a build up of fluid in the chest or abdomen as the heart and kidneys weaken and become less able to circulate blood and rid the body of fluid. This can cause the symptoms you describe. It may also be that she has a chest infection. Is she clicky or wheezy? If she is still content and eating and drinking with no other symptoms I guess you could wait and see if she rallies again. I do hope so.
I'd do what you did last time and give her a day or so before stressing her with a vet visit. That's what I would do but you know her best suga and can tell what she needs.

Poor baby hammy . She's been out for a drink and is still eating. I don't want to take her to the vet as it will be stressful. I think its age related as she will be 2 in January 2010. I'm just continuing to spoil her and give her lots of love. Ironic that I seem to loose hamsters during winter.

She's not wheezy I don't think she has a chest infection or anything. Certainly not that I can see/hear. Age related i think.

Thanks souffle for your reply.

She is still with us at the moment. OH said she was out for an hour today but was just sat in the corner. She was eating and maybe has had a drink of water. She's still breathing heavy and if she's still here after the weekend then i will see if i can get her to the vet on Tuesday next week. I don't think it will help to be honest as I still thinks its the age thing. But we shall see.

thanks - she came out today for a bit. She does not appear to have had drunk anything though but did take water from a spoon when she was out this afternoon. She has also had some baby food and a bit of apple. She still breathing rapidly but actually opened her eyes this afternoon and winked at me. .

She been rattling around in her nest as well so I have been pleased to see and hear her a bit more today. She's getting all the love and knows how much she means to us.

thanks again.

I'm now thinking she should see a vet. I don't want to stress her out but am thinking what if it can be treated and is not age related. I wish she could tell me what she needs. h

She's still alive this morning. She's out of her bed in the corner of her cage. Her eyes are closed and she is not responding to her name, to treats or anything. She tried to move a second a go and was rolling. She's been waiting for us to tell her its okay to leave - why else would she be hanging on like this. She's dying. I'm going to tell her when hubby is up. She's not unwell - its just her time. :'-(

Well she's still here. She has just had some water from a spoon and some porridge. Her eyes are closed and her breathing is slightly slower now. She's very wobbly on her paws though and really is barely moving.

thanks for reading...
