Er... Yeah, what NileCrocs said. If you read the last post on the first page of this thread you'll see the proof that it was definetly fluffy bedding and Jam was very lucky to make a full recovery. Wet tail drops wouldn't have helped but avoiding fluffy bedding would have prevented it, unfortunately far too many of us join this site trusting that if its sold its safe - this thread is good to show people that just because its sold, it isn't always safe.

HoppyHammy, this thread is ages old, and stickied to warn about the dangers of Fluffy bedding. It WAS fluffy bedding that caused this hamsters problem. If your robos are displaying similar symptoms and you are using fluffy bedding, REMOVE IT IMMEDIATELY, and take your robos to a vet as soon as possible. Fluffy bedding is insanely dangerous and there's loads of petitions to get it banned from pet stores.

Furthermore, wet tail drops do NOT cure wet tail, only disguise the symptoms, and only Syrian hamsters can be infected with Wet Tail. Robos or other species can suffer from diarrhea, but it is not the same thing.

I'd encourage you to read the full thread before posting in the future.

Really? I had a Chinese hamster who had diarrhea and blood in feces and the vet told me it was wet tail? we managed to cure it but he caught it again a few weeks later and this time it had the best of him...

Is aspen wood shavings ok? I have used this for all my hamsters with some loo paper as burrowing material.

If by "towel" you meant anything made of cloth, DON'T. If the hamster tries to shred it, as s/he almost certainly will, the fibres pose the same dangers as those found in fluffy bedding. Paper kitchen roll is little better since it's extremely tough and most have been designed to not fall apart on contact with water, putting your hamster at risk of impaction should it be swallowed or pouched.

What a wonderful recovery your little man made and it has to be said, well done to your vet. I second what has been said as well about chasing this company for selling this unsafe bedding. If your vet could confirm that the bedding was to blame, they should take it off the market with immediate effect if they care about what they sell. I personally wouldn`t buy anything with the brand name Rotastak connected to it. When I was last in our Pets At Home, I saw the safe bed paper shreds and flakes in bags, but I`m also sure I saw the fluffy stuff aswell on the shelves. I don`t get to out shop all that often as it`s in a retail park and need a car to access it.

I use a mixture of paper bedding (it`s actually called "Safebed paper wool", but that is very misleading. They should change the word `wool` on the packaging as it`s actually paper parchment, which is a much better title for this product. I mix this with ripped up plain white toilet paper! Both my syrian and chinese get both.

Pets At Home do well enough once the horse has bolted. They really need to stop selling unsafe products. As has been said, there are many reports of this wool bedding being bad for small animals and a company this size obviously don`t do the same research that hamster owners do. Which seems a bit rediculous. Don`t they have market research people working for them?

So pleased to hear you have had a good outcome from this pompom. x
