Default Hormone Imbalance

Hi all,

My poor Hector is starting to lose alot of fur. My vet diagnosed him with a hormone imbalance a few months ago as he had a few bald patches. Now he’s losing more and is nearly bald on the top of his head. He’s coming up to turning 2 in February so not a spring chicken anymore.

I’m not sure I can do much about the fur loss apart from making sure he is kept warm. He’s always been quite solid and doesn’t seem to have any other health problems.

Any ideas?

It could be a few things one of which is Cushings disease. There is an article on the WIKI about that.
Older hams often suffer hair loss. You can try adding some debittered brewers yeast (from Holland & Barratt) to either some porridge or sprinkled on his food and this often helps. Also a drop of codliver oil once a week but some hamsters wont eat this and it is a bit smelly. Maybe spoil him with a little baby food, chicken, pasta and porridge. He is still the same hammy just without his coat on

The info that souffle has provided was just what I was going to say. I have the same problem with lilbear - she's a little less furry too. As long as there are no other health issues - a little less fur isn't too bad. A little extra bedding if its cold maybe to help keep warm. ?
