wet tail disease....?
Been looking on the net and every where says the same thing,
just wondering if any one here has had any 1st hand experience with it?
think my hamster might have it, she got out of her cage and in to one of my wardrobe draws. think shes got her self worked up and got it
shes showing a few symptoms such as smelly, drowsy and wet rear end
iv read that your suppost to let them rest and keep there cage tidy so im disinfecting her whole cage now, and giving her some fresh veg (she loves it)
is there anything else i can do? more excersise? leave her alone?
she is 1 year and six months old but a very healthy and energetic hamster usually!
*i dont want a big debate on cages and how im a moron for letting her escape - i know this. I just want to know any other ways i can help?*
Many thanks

Re: wet tail disease....?
Get to the vets immediately. The only way to cure wet tail is through prompt administration of antibiotics, rest won't help - the veg will rehydrate her, but will also increase the diarrhoea risk so only a small amount should be given.

Re: wet tail disease....?
True wet tail is only found in hamsters under 12 weeks or so. It sounds as if she may have eaten something while she was out and about which has upset her tummy. She could have eaten some fibres which are causing a blockage or something inside her. I wouldn't feed veg at the moment as this can make looseness worse. Stick to the dry seed mix and if you can get some arrowroot biscuits they can help.
Are you sure it is not a discharge she has. This can look like diaorrhoea but is actually from a womb infection. Does her tummy seem swollen at all?
I agree with IN and you should see a vet with her for a firm diagnosis and treatment.
Hope she is better soon.

Re: wet tail disease....?
right, iv cleaned her whole cage out, But whilst doing her bed room, i put her in her ball so i could do it propally...
she almost seemed fine? she didnt smell as much (had a bit on a tinge) got her out and wiped her down with some baby wipes and her bum just looked wet?
i couldnt find any runney poo around her cage, just normal poo....
is it possible she could have sat/layed in her own wee?

Re: wet tail disease....?
Maybe she got panicky and sat in wee when she was out? Monitor her carefully and see how she goes overnight

Re: wet tail disease....?
it sounds like you woudl prefer not to go to vet so best thing to do is leave her alone now in her cage with fresh water and some dry mix plenty of bedding and not disturb her for a day or two till she settles down again - keep an eye out that she is still getting out and about her cage but don't wake her up etc
