Hi everyone
I've been a lurker here for a while and learnt loads from your collective wisdom! So now I just signed up to share with you my method for wearing down my hamster's nails, which works really well!
My Dwarf hamsters's nails were getting really long and curling to the side, but he is far too small and squirmy for me to try and trim them.
I bought some Very Fine grade sandpaper. The stuff in the hardware shop is too coarse, I got some from Halfords and it's for sanding undercoat paint on cars. It cost £3 for four A4 sheets.
I used this to line a small storage basket. I popped my hamster (with some food and a toilet roll to make it less scary!) in the basket and watched him scrabble his claws on the paper to climb up the sides. It worked fantastically, after about 3 minutes they were worn right down. (Also, as the sandpaper is black I could see the tiny white specks of nail dust that showed it was working!)
Just be careful not to leave your hamster in there for too long so he/she doesn't get sore feet or stressed out. My hamster is absolutely fine after 2-3 minutes
Hope this is helpful!
Best,
Cate
