Default Re: Russian's Bleeding Tummy

it says the pup is 8 months in the first post, Souffle At that age i would expect them to be settled down. I've never had a pair start to have problems at that age (unless you change something like cage or set-up). I would say that usually if you get so the youngest in the pair is 8 months then you're pretty much "safe" for life. If a fall-out is gonna happen, it's usually happened by 6 months.

it's difficult with pet shop "Russians" cos you don't actually know what the greatest percentage of species is in there. The thing is that advice for Campbells is different to that for Winter Whites (pet shop Russians are a hybrid of the 2 species & there's no way to know what % of each species they have).

i'd imagine that the pup is sensitive about being touched and is warning mamma off. With some pairs, i've seen the healthy one trying to mother the sick one and kinda trampling them and only getting in the way. Then it can go the other way and the healthy one can attack the sick, but i've never had that happen with mine.

Theyve only fallen out since the baby has been hurt. The mummy keeps going up to her to check on her or whatever and the baby just squeals and turns over and keeps squealing. her belly is so sore

I kept them apart last night, and put them in a neutral ground this morning and see how they got on. They fought.
Then i rang my friend who has experience with rats and she helped me try again with nothing in the box.
They didnt fight as much! But they did start to.

I don't know what to do. Its sad because when i took the baby out then mummy was looking for her everywher!

They normally get on fine. A little squabble but thats it.

:/ maybe it is best to seperate them. Its so sad

you can't separate overnight and then put back together, especially when things are rocky anyway... that's why i said in the other post you either have to keep them together or separate forever. I doubt they'll go back together now. You'll probably just stress the sick one out if you keep separating and trying to re-introduce and causing fights. It's probably best just to leave them apart now.

p.s. no offense to your friend but rats are nothing like dwarf hamsters. Things like rats and mice are easy to introduce new friends to, but dwarf hamsters are fickle and ruthless. It's a totally different kettle of fish.
