Stuck crusty eyes
Dexter is a one year old syrian. His eyes always seem to be stuck shut when he gets up i sometimes have to use cooled boiled water and cotton buds to open them. There is no gunk in them so i wonder why this is happening. They eventualy open of their own accord but there is bits of crustiness still on them. I told vet but he wasnt too concerned but it worries me. Does anyone know why this happens? He is otherwise very healthy.

Re: Stuck crusty eyes
what substrate is he on? Could he be a bit allergic to it and it is causing some eye irritation? May be worth trying a alternative to see if that helps. I would keep up the bathing maybe twice a day and would add a pinch of salt to the boiled cooled water as an eye wash. Sometimes hammies can get blocked tear ducts leading to the crusty eyes or possible a previous damage or infection can cause changes in the tear production also leading to the sticky eyes. If he shows any other symptoms though I would have hime seen again at the vets.

Does the salt not irritate the eyes?

Tears are salty so no it won't. The normal solution you make up would be 1pt of boiled water with 1 teaspoon salt added. If using less water like maybe a cup then I would add just a pinch of salt. It is actually more comfortable on the eyes than plain water

All animals that have a tear duct have tears. Granted, hamsters don't cry like humans do, but in most animals, tears serve a biological function. This is to rid of debris and harmful irritants from their eyes
