Re: Flaps of skin
The vet said she had mites, and the scabs were where she'd scratched and torn the skin, so I've given her something to get rid of them so hopefully there'll be an improvement.

Re: Flaps of skin
Aw poor hammy. Glad you've got something to put on them. Is it Invermectin from the vet? You might need to do a full cage clean unfortunately, then treat her while she's out of the cage and then pop her back in. ie change all the bedding, wash any plastic toys and possibly bake any wood toys.

Re: Flaps of skin
Sorry to hear, mites are not fun, glad your getting her treated. Did the vet give her topical ivermectine or a syringe for you to give it to her orally.
You'll need to do frequent cage cleanings as the eggs hatch in the bedding and on your hammie. So it takes awhile to get rid of them.
I've had a hamster with mites and I was unsuccessful in getting rid of them, he got worse but his own immune system was compromised so he couldn't fight them off with medication. I was traumatized by that. I'm sure you will have a healthier hammy that can fight this off with no problem other than inconvenience and try not to worry if you are as your doing the best you can

Re: Flaps of skin
I'll make sure to do a cage clean then. The vet told us to get Ivermectin from the pet shop as it was cheaper there than he could get it from the supplier, but yes, that's what we've give her, and it rubs on the skin. I've also given Tey (my RD) a dose as he said you can do that to prevent it, so hopefully he won't get them too.

Re: Flaps of skin
Ivermectine isn't expensive, the vet exam is what's expensive
From the pet shop?? Did you take her to an exotic vet or a small animal vet?

Re: Flaps of skin
I hate to say it but that vet doesn't sound too knowledgeable, especially promoting the use of potentially harmful medicine where it just isn't necessary
If possible, find a more knowledgeable vet,as this one does not seem that good.

Apparently their supplier charges a lot for it for some reason. We took her to our local vet.

Re: Flaps of skin
Dog and cat vets don't always know much about small animals You need someone who specializes in small animals or at least has lots of knowledge in them, not necessarily an exotic vet(they might be great at times but not always the best choice)though

Re: Flaps of skin
I posted something on your other thread about an exotic vet in Suffolk - they specialise in all exotics including rodents - in Suffolk
Suffolk Exotic Vet
I would be very careful buying any mite treatment. I am not sure the stuff sold in the shops is the same as the Invermectin the vets prescribe. And sometimes a vet can give an injection rather than topical treatment. Is it "spot on" you bought.
See how she goes over the next week, as she's had the stress of a vet visit and a cage clean, and then maybe think about taking her for another opinion to the exotic vet. It might be something else and/or they may prescribe the correct topical treatment or give an injection.
