Losing his fur...

I noticed a few months ago that one of my syrians, Hammibal, started to lose quite a bit of fur on his back and sides. It seemed to get quite bad and then suddenly came back. Now it has started to go again - do you have any idea what it could be? He is around 18 months old - I know that hammies lose their fur as they get older, is this pretty normal or is it something to worry about?

It looks as if he has been moulting Melon. They can look quite tatty when they do this. and it seems to get worse as they get older.
As long as the fur is not completely gone and is not red and itchy I would not be too concerned. If he seems itchy it may be best to have him checked for mites at the vet and get some treatment if it is this. As their hormones decline with age males certainly get thinner fur.

Phew! Thanks Souffle, he isn't scratching it and it doesn't look red but I will keep an eye on him. Just got me worried because my other male syrian hasn't lost any fur at all!

One of my old sable males Slayer has lost all his rear fur similar to yours, he's fine in himself and must just be an old man thing which happens to some hammies. He does look strange though, he's turned from a sable to a half sable half cream!
