Worried about Deadpool
Hi I'm Furrybabies I just bought my little guy a few days ago I'm worried about deadpool he won't let me check him out I have suspicions that his sick, but can't even pick him up the Petco lady said his over 4 months I love him, but don't know how I'm going to handle him he keeps letting me pet him but he scampers away when I try to hold him and check him out, I've tried baiting him into my hands with his favorite food and treats but he won't even eat them if their in my hand or if I try hand feeding him, his behavior has changed a bit since my first real worry when he kept trying to scale the walls but I'm still worried that my little guy is sick,
Any tips on how I can get my little guy to trust me enough to check him out and maybe handle him?

Re: Worried about Deadpool
Put a treat or food in a transparent jar and when the hamster is inside lift it up be careful the hamster can't climb out though.

Re: Worried about Deadpool
It's only natural that he's skittish if you've only had him a few days & if you do keep trying to pick him up at this stage it will probably just stress him so the jar is a good way to get a better look at him, also if you can get him to climb into the jar or anything else you can transport him try putting him into a large bin or box, one he can't escape from but small enough so he can't run & hide then you can observe him more easily.
What's happened that makes you think he may be sick?

Re: Worried about Deadpool
What species is he? If he's climbing his bars it could be a sign of stress-related behaviours. How big is his cage? What cage is it? If it is too small of a cage it could be stressing him out although I wouldn't go changing a cage after a few days.
I wouldn't try picking him up yet. He needs time to settle in so I would give him a few days before you start taming, especially if he's never been handled before. If you are seriously concerned I would recommend what CMB said with a glass jar or taking him to a local exotics vet.
What is he doing that makes you think he's sick? It could just be a Deadpool adapting to his new environment in which case he may be display some symptoms of illness when in fact it's stress-related. The only stress-related illness to worry about is wet tail, which should only really be a concern in Syrian hamsters.
Good luck and I hope he's ok !

Re: Worried about Deadpool
Good to hear he is having treatment however the petco lady is talking rubbish because winter whites and roborovski are totally different species and could never interbreed!

Re: Worried about Deadpool
Fingers crossed he makes a good recovery and is back with you soon.
Winter Whites don't come in pure white. Campbells Albino do though and you can get White robos. Also he could be a hybrid ( Campbells crossed with winter white which can interbreed as they are so close genetically )
When you have him home and well you can post a picture x

Re: Worried about Deadpool
So sorry Deadpool isn't well but, that the petshop are treating him. Be sure to check up on him and ask about him and his treatment. Don't be fobbed of by them.
Lol! Souffle - straight to the point with your wonderful knowledge.
