Default Wheel Shy

This is actually pretty hilarious, but Ambrose, my winter white, won't run on his wheel if he knows you're watching him. If he wants to run while you're there, he'll wait until you look away, start running, and then when you look back he'll stop and look at you until you look away again. Usually he tries to run when you're sleeping or out of the room. Is anyone else's hamster like this?

Lawrence can get in moods like this. Sometimes I think he just stops because if I'm look at him there is a chance he might get some play time or treats!

All of my hamster's run on their wheels in the light except my Chinese hamster, Izzy. It has to be totally dark & quiet for her to run.

If I happen to walk by and look in her cage when it's dark, she'll stop running & goes to hide.

Mine just likes human attention, so will get off her wheel to beg for cuddles! However if you stay still for long enough she will go back on it again and make a racket

Mine seem to have different types of running lol! There's private night time running when they'd rather wait until the lights are out before beginning a marathon & daytime or mostly morning runs which are "Look, here I am, come & give me a treat!" runs

At the moment Jessie is the only hamster I have that has a wheel in her cage that she actually uses and she's a little attention seeker with it and is as noisy as possible as she runs to make sure you notice her. James will occasionally use his wheel (he's prone to laziness) and it doesn't seem to bother him either way if you're watching him or not.

One of my previous Chineseys would never run with an audience and would run away if you walked in on him as he was running but if you walked in on him any other time he'd just carry on. He was a funny boy!

That sounds so cute. Harvey has moments too. Sometimes he'll stop and just stare at me and if I don't go away, he'll go into his house. Other times he'll quite happily let me watch and encourage him. Majority of the time he enjoys having an audience and goes all out fast which has me laughing.
