Question mite treatment

Hi guys

I bought my new syrian hamster a few weeks ago and noticed she was biting her fur a lot so took her for a health check and it turns out she has mites so we are currently treating her for that at the moment, however now my dwarf is itching more than normal! 😕 they don't share anything apart from they go in the same pen (obviously not at the same time)
would it be harmful to treat him with a hamster spot on treatment even if he doesn't have mites? Just to be safe? If he does have them then he could pass them back on and so forth and it would just be a cycle of each hamster having mites.

Thanks ☺

The only reason you should ever use spot on treatments is because a vet has confirmed, with proof, that the hamster has mites. Not as in the hamster thinks there are mites, but an actual proper diagnosis.

If your hamster doesn't have mites and you use the spot on treatment,it can severely harm your pet.In fact, some spot on treatments can even be toxic. It would cause severe stress as well, which can end up causing health problems even further as well as behavior problems.

For a while it may be best to use separate areas/play pens for each hamster If possible.

Thank you! I was unsure if it could be bad. I will keep an eye on him and take him to vets to get a proper diagnosis. Thanks again ☺

I'd take the other in and checked as depending on what kind of mite your new Ham has it is very possible for the other to get mites from using the same play area after the hamster who had confirmed mites.

I do agree with Amittyville Hams that treating for mites without there being mites is not a good idea at all and could be very harmful. The Vet will be able to give you the proper dosage should he have mites, as dwarf Hamsters usually need a different dosage then a Syrian.
