Poorly honey
Hi everyone we are new to this forum so hello.
Got a gorgeous Syrian teddy bear hamster he had wet tail 4 months ago but fully recovered. He then became poorly about 4 weeks ago but got better a couple of days later by himself. But 2 weeks ago he started with wet tail again and refused antibiotics and treatment for diarrhea seemed to pick up last Tuesday so vet said wait and see before we help him to go to sleep. Just checked on our lovely little boy and he is so poorly and a struggle to walk out of his bed and when he did he tripped over and couldn't get up for a minute then he struggled back to his bed. His ears are no longer up they seem to have disappeared he was a long haired chunky little guy but his fur is flat and he is so thin now. Would it be kinder to take him to the vet to be helped to cross his rainbow bridge or live in hope still? He doesn't like to be handled so worried his last moments in the vets hands will distress him more. We love him so much and when we said night night honey love you lots he squeaked from his bed. Please any help appreciated xxx

Re: Poorly honey
I'm sorry to hear this. With wet tail even if your hamster initially recovers the lining of the bowel has been so badly damaged by the wet tail that the hamster cannot absorb food properly or digest it and the diarrhoea just returns.
You really have tried your best and it sounds as if he has bowel damage that is not fixable sadly. Only you can decide but take the vets advice and remember no decision made from love is ever wrong. I thik maybe that squeak was a little whisper that he was ready.I hope his path is gentle x

Re: Poorly honey
I would just like to say thank you so very much for your kind words. It's made me feel at ease with my decision I followed the vets advice and he's now happily at peace. I didn't know it caused damage permanently so it's a comfort to know he's pain free now and he was loved and cared all his life. Well always miss him and love him.
Thank you very much 😊 xxx

Re: Poorly honey
It was a great gift to give him rest. He will be running free at the Rainbow bridge now with no pain <3
I'd leave it a good while before you let a new baby in to your heart to allow the cage etc to clean just in case. It is best to sterilise everything and throw out potty / wood items / food and bottle and bleach everything and rinse really well. We like to them leave it out in the sun for a few days then repeat with pet safe disinfectant and rinse then store about three weeks before using for a new resident. It should be clear by then.
Remember he made your heart a little bigger so now he is there and he made a space for a new friend to share your life when you feel ready x

Re: Poorly honey
I'm so sorry for your loss. What a brave little trooper he was. It is such a terrible disease and you were very unlucky. As Souffle says, he is playing free over the rainbow bridge now and free from suffering. When you are ready for a new hamster maybe get one from somewhere else in case the pet shop has issues. He may have already had it when you got him.
