My hamster had a rotten carrot in his house!
I found a rotten carrot in his house when I checked. It was obviously his hoard, but I took it away and put a cucumber there. Is this fine? I'm a little worried!

Re: My hamster had a rotten carrot in his house!
I'm sure he'll be fine if he seems ok. Good job you spotted it. I wouldn't put cucumber there instead though or it might go bad too. You do need to check the hoard to see if fresh food has been hoarded - maybe every 5 days or so. He might stop doing it if you take it away! Just replace it with some dried hamster mix. I found a virtual broccoli compost heap under our hammy's nest when we first got him! I swapped his house for one that was open to the substrate underneath, which helped. These days he always eats fresh food and doesn't hoard it - they do learn I think!
