Re: Poor Nibble broke his leg :( question about meloxicam doseage
I put it in a little bit of home made baby food. He's a bit of a fussy eater so I thought it would be as well to make sure he gets something wholesome to help him heal!

Re: Poor Nibble broke his leg :( question about meloxicam doseage
Need to check my bottle and syringe now! The mark on my syringe is .7 of one unit, not of one ml, so that would make 0.07 of ml - I think? Good job you checked with the vet. 0.1ml sounds right then, as that would be one unit on the 1ml syringe (my syringe has 10 units on it). ie just a bit bigger than Charlie's dose. Apologies for the confusion.
Actually I am more confused now! I just tested how much the Syringe holds, that came with the Metacam and it is bigger than a 1ml syringe. According to the leaflet each of the 10 marks corresponds to 1kg of cat weight. The mark the vet made on my syringe is about 1/7th of one of those marks (which seems to be about 3 drops from the bottle).
How on earth you are supposed to measure 0.1ml when the syringe isn't marked in mls seems a bit strange. I know the vet I saw had to go away and work out a dosage.

Re: Poor Nibble broke his leg :( question about meloxicam doseage
Seems like a far more sensible dosage! I hope Nibble takes his medication like a good boy and recovers soon x

Re: Poor Nibble broke his leg :( question about meloxicam doseage
I have a few sterile 1ml syringes left over from my daughter's baby days, it's marked in 0.1 ml increments so easy to use to measure. The one that came in the meloxicam box was marked in doses per kg so would have been impossible to measure out the small amount for a hammy accurately! m going to try and get more syringes today from the pharmacy and see if they have smaller ones.
Nibble was bright as a button this morning, took all his medicine with no fuss - I truly am amazed at the resilience of a hamster. He's living in my bedroom at the moment because it's quiet and I can keep an ear out at night, he was pottering around last night for a bit in the tiny floor space he has left around his next box (I transplanted his nest completely into the little cage).

Sounds like Nibble's recovery is going well, it always helps when they take their medicine.

Re: Poor Nibble broke his leg :( question about meloxicam doseage
Glad you managed to find a vet who knew what they were doing. It`s worrying that someone without your savvy may have went ahead with that higher dosage and done real damage. A friend of mine took some young mice to her vets once for topical mite treatment. The mice started convulsing and died soon afterwards because the wrong dosage was given. Shocking. So please always double check what`s being given and never leave the surgery if you have any niggling doubts about anything x

Re: Poor Nibble broke his leg :( question about meloxicam doseage
It is worrying! My first vet put a marker on the syringe to show how much was needed - but if someone is prescribed 0.1ml and doesn't realise that the syringe isn't a 1ml syringe it could be a bit tricky. I also bought some 1ml syringes because they had a narrow end on but didn't realise till yesterday that the syringe in the Metacam bottle isn't a 1ml one. I didn't need our Metacam in the end.
