Exclamation Hamster statue ?!

I have noticed that whenever I'm with my hamster he plays around and suddenly stops and freezes and only his nose will twitch ... Usually I think maybe he is trying to sniff his surroundings but he will literally stay like that for 10 to 15 mins ! I have to always give him a tap or nudge to get him out of this trance ! Why is this happening ?? and he is a very healthy boy ...

They do this usually when they hear something, or think that a 'predator' is close by. So they will stand still in hopes that the predator doesn't see them. It's nothing to worry about and sometimes they do stay in their zone for quite some time. It's normal for them to do that so there's no need to worry My hamsters do it all the time, especially Myrcella.

Thanks for letting me know Winnietheham for a second I thought he had a thing for daydreaming ! But the thing is everytime he goes into this trance I can do anything to him, I can lift his lip and check his teeth, touch his ears and I can literally fling him across the room (which I obviously will never ever do! Just exaggerating..) and he still won't twitch .... And then suddenly he will snap out of it ... It's kind of cute but in a creepy way

Well I guess it's a good thing really, you can health check him without him squirming around! haha No problem.

lol @ Winnie and the health check idea!

My Syrian Spike did the freezing thing a lot when I first got him and I couldn't figure out why because I couldn't hear a thing. In the end I figured out he was responding to the crying baby in the flat upstairs. Their hearing is much much better than others so I would think he is definitely hearing something that you can't. What I usually do if it happens is just talk to him softly so he knows I'm there and eventually he snaps out of it. I think the main thing when they're like that is not to startle them any further
