It could be, or it may not be associated. But give any vet you see as much information as you can from HC and online regarding what this `might` be in case they don`t give it their full attention. There is something called HaPV in Syrians that is not always fully understood, but try googling that and have a read. Sometimes a specific mite can cause these small scabs to form on the tips of the ears and for the life of me, I can`t remember the clinical name, but the vet you see for the check over should be able to determine which is which. x

Hopefully its nothing too serious, whatever it is!

If it was a type of mite like you said above racinghamster, surely he would be itching? I haven't seen any changes in his cleaning/scratching behaviours.

He is booked in at the vets on Thursday at 11:40! Hopefully it will go better than the last visit.

I took him out just now and had him running around for a little while. He does scratch at his ears, so whatever it is it must be irritating him

Maybe it is ear mites or something like that after all?

See what the vet sais tomorrow but if they say right off what it is, then that`s what you want to hear and can determine what, if any course of action to take. On the other hand, if they are guessing or are not sure, I wouldn`t give any medications on an assumption as they can be detrimental to the hamsters gut if they are given as a precaution rather than a cure/control.

It could well be a mite but I`m more inclined to think it looks viral, like a herpes type virus. Humans carry herpes (cold sore) virus and it only shows as sores around the lips and face when our immune systems are compromise, so give it the benefit of the doubt until the vet gives you some answers. I also wouldn`t be too concerned that it`s catchable as it`s probably host specific, but hopefully the vet will give you some peace of mind. x

Went to the vets, vet didnt really know what it was!

She said to me to get some canesten ointment/cream from the pharmacy and to put a little onto his ears and a tiny tiny bit on his nose twice a day (morning and eve) for two to three weeks. The cream is actually treatment for thrush!!! for humans! But she said it has antifungal properties in it which should hopefully sort him out.

If it doesn't seem to be working, or it gets worse she said she'll think of something else for us to try. She was talking about it maybe being ringworm, but there is no where were he could have caught it from or anything like that.

She thinks its very strange whatever it is!! Cost me nothing though for that visit!

Vet left him traumatized again though... I just dont think he likes being picked up in a towel! He didnt scream or wriggle or anything when she handled him, but when I put him back in his cage he sat there frozen for about 5 minutes, then moved super slowly around his cage and went to bed. He's doing good now though!

Here's hoping the treatment works. He's been very good when it comes to me putting it on his ears and nose though! No bites yet! Not even wriggling away from me! Maybe he knows he gets a small treat after each treatment though...

Hey if bribery works then go for it! Pity the vet wasn't sure what it was. Hopefully the thrush creams works. If not though definitely push the vet for a referral to a rodent specialist. Poor Hugo!

Fingers crossed the cream does the trick, as I said (in the other thread I think) I was thinking a fungal infection so lets hope that's what it is & he'll be back to normal soon.
