Smelly hamster help??!!
Hi everyone,
Is it normal for female adult Syrians to have a very strong smell? It's not the cage it's her, I don't really mind it just checking she is healthy. She also has a yellow tinge to her fur around her bum area (usually white).
Should I take her to the vet?

Re: Smelly hamster help??!!
Your hamster is in heat. You are smelling the pheromones she is putting of to attract a male. The yellow I am not sure about but it could be tied to her being in heat.

She will be in heat once about every 4 days. She will only be in heat for a small time during the evening but the smell of the pheromones may linger. If you let her mate then she will become a lot more defensive about being picked up. But it depends on the hamster. My WW was pregnant and I picked her up less than an hour before giving birth.

Will she be unhappy if she doesn't mate?

Not at all, it is just the only time she will accept a mate is on the fourth day in the evening.

Re: Smelly hamster help??!!
Hi Tinward. Yes she's in heat. Our first hammy Gizmo absolutely STANK when she was in heat, you could practically smell it from the hallway! They can behave oddly too, like you say ours would get very skittish & irritable, unusually antisocial & very occasionally even a bit bitey. As a female, I'd equate this to PMT, I feel exactly the same at my time of the month!
With the yellow around her bum, please check she doesn't have wet fur & other symptoms of Wet Tail. (There's lots of info on this forum about Wet tail) Don't panic, it might be nothing but please do check, esp. if she's young.

Re: Smelly hamster help??!!
When she's in heat there will be a slight smell and a small amount of discharge.
If however the smell is absolutely foul smelling and the discharge is staining the fur I suggest a trip to the vet. Put a finger on each side of her vulva and push gently, if you get a lot of pus looking stuff coming out, that is a sign of infection and needs to be seen by a vet right away.
If its just a slight smell though and the discharge is minimal then it should be fine
