What herbi said really, until your ham is tame enough to be handled without stress just general observation is enough, weighing regularly does also help so you know immediately if there are any changes to worry about there & most hams will sit in a container for a few moments without being stressed.
Syrians nails don't often get overgrown so especially with a young one you're not likely to have a problem there.
