Losing weight
Dos is getting older, and over the past few days he has lost a substantial amount of weight. How are some ways I can help him get a little chub back? What foods will help with that?
Thanks.

Re: Losing weight
Hi Taylor. Old age can tend to cause some weight loss/deterioration but your right to be looking at this to help him gain some back, or at least to maintain his health better in old age.
Can I ask, is Dos getting (or has ever had) fresh, raw vegetables as well as his dry hamster food? These can be very important to a hamsters health as they provide extra vitamins/minerals/fibre. Is Dos a Syrian or a dwarf species?
I read it was down today but look at the WiKi link in the left hand side of this page titled "Navigation". It has a good list of foods, safe and unsafe that hamsters enjoy. Stay away from citrus or anything fancy, stick to basics.
What dry mix/mixes are you using and do you buy more than one type of food and combine these? Variety is important because sometimes if one hamster food only has basic ingredients, they will maintain a hamster for a while and then lose their appeal, which is why it`s important to look at adding other mixes or additional foods in.
Chopped nuts, millets seeds and sprays (contain oils) sunflower and pumpkin seeds, plain flaked porridge oats and being creative with things that are carbohydrates for energy.
Veggies: Fresh or frozen (but thaw in cold water for half an hour before feeding) in 4mm piece sizes:
Broccoli, cauliflower, sweet corn/baby sweet corn, garden peas, carrot, Kale, lettuce (only a small piece) to name the good, basic veggies that are enjoyed by hamsters and contain very good nutrition. Broccoli is said to have proven cancer fighting properties.
The Hamster Council (in the UK) website states that hamsters that are NOT fed vegetables as part of their daily/weekly diet can lose condition, so it`s quite important to feed these. Hope this helps. x

Re: Losing weight
If you want to get some weight back on Dos, then baby food will help, go for the veggie as the fruit can be high in sugar.
Baby Cauliuflower Cheese, Brocolli Cauliflower Cheese, Sweet Potato and Carrot, Peas and Courgettes. Also porridge, scrambled egg and melted cheese on toast.

Re: Losing weight
I find baby food, porridge & some finally chopped nuts can all help with weight loss, you don't want too much protein with an older ham but a little chicken now & then is still a good addition too, if the weight loss has been very sudden rather than the more gradual weight loss common in old age you may want to check he can eat ok, or that there aren't any other possible health issues that may be causing a problem.

Re: Losing weight
Dos is a syrian, and I give him veggies every day. I will give him some boiled egg and chicken every so often from now on. Thanks for your help
