Swollen Tummy
Hi my female hamster has a very swollen tummy and isn't eating very well compared to normal.she appears unsteady on her feet too. She isn't pregnant as she's been no where near our other male hamster, they are kept in separate cages and always have been.
Does anyone have any idea what can be causing this, I will be seeing a vet as I don't like to think of any animal being in pain. But wanted to prepare my daughter as its her hamster.

Re: Swollen Tummy
It's good that you are seeing the vet. Female hammies can have lady issues and only a vet can help. Hamsters can also get tumors and stomach problems. There really is no way for us to know for sure what her problems are. I don't know that you can prepare your daughter since you also don't want to scare her unnecessarily. I'd wait to see the vet. I do hope your little fluff is okay. Fingers crossed here!

Re: Swollen Tummy
I agree with DrK, the best thing to do is to take her to the vet. We all are sending our best wishes that it is nothing too bad!

Re: Swollen Tummy
You're doing the right thing in taking your ham to the vet. It could be a build up of fluid or a tumour, the vet will be able to tell you by examining her what's wrong.
When's your appointment?

Re: Swollen Tummy
Wendy, I'm so sorry to hear this but Magic is at peace and pain free. How's your daughter coping with the news?
You did the right thing taking her to the vet and letting her go, it's really hard getting your head round what's happened but remember you gave Magic a happy and loving life and home.

Re: Swollen Tummy
Thanks everyone, my daughter is ok. We did talk through last night the possible outcomes so it wouldn't be a total shock if it happened. A Few big hugs and some TLC from mum helped too.
