Default Hamtaro has the wet tail!

Hello all,

Recently somehow my baby hamtaro contracted wet tail. My partner and me diagnosed it with pictures we found from the site and then took him to the vets for some anti biotics. However from reading up on it, Im slightly confused.

Firstly hamtaro doesnt seem altogether that sick! I mean he has diarrhoea and was quite sleepy at first but after that was running around his cage like he normally did and going for it on his wheel like a mad one! He hasn't been put off his food and he's still drinking. So where does the vet get off telling me he might die?!

Hamtaro is quite a stocky fella and a large syrian and could it be that he just hasn't been badly affected. Has anyone had any experience with wet tail they can share with me? Its just he doesn't seem like the picture of ill health i'd image for a sick ham.

Also he is on ENROFLOXACIN not baytryl which everyone else seems to be on. Any ideas what this is?

thanx

ENROFLOXACIN is Baytril, Baytril is the trade name! So your ham is on the same antibiotics as all the other hamsters.
Heres some links to infomation about wet tail you could try:
http://www.petwebsite.com/hamsters/hamster_wet_tail.htm
http://www.vetbase.co.uk/information/we ... msters.php
http://www.britishhamsterassociation.or ... ilfact.htm
You could google "wet tail" for more websites.
My hamster currently has a secondry infection of the lungs, and he is also on baytril, i found that my Sammi was behaving normally, and seemed a healthy happy hamster, even after he coughed up some blood, hes still on baytril now and it seems to be improving sammis infection alot, so i hope you will see the same results.
I really doubt size effects how the are effected by wet tail, its more likley to be their age that effects this, but its best you see what others say as im not sure.
As you probably know hamsters have a very short lifespan, which means they can still live to their expected age if you take good care of them, but wet tail can kill at any point, but you should see his condition deteriorate before he passes away.
My best advice is i can give to you is to have a look at some infomation on the internet about wet tail, and make sure you keep him as comfy and as happy as possible, and enjoy the time you have left with him, he could still be around for a while yet!
Hope he pulls through

Thanks for that. Just as a bit of an update, he has stopped smelling and is having some solid poo's!!!! :P

He still is a bit tired, but managed to convince my mum and dad to give me their spare fish tank its 93cm x 30 cm so if he is good a pulls through (like I hope he is going to) then he will have a lovely nice new cage for him with loads of new toys

If you catch it quickly it can mean he has a better chance. keep stress to a minimum which likely means not moveing him to that lovely new tank for a good few months and make sure he is well hydrated. The progess sounds good do far so well done you. Keep up with his meds and gentleness, quiet, rest and good food.
Get well soon Hamtaro

sounds like it could have just been diarrohea and not wet tail. Glad he is getting better.

Well he still seems very tired today but his tail is now bone dry!!! Yeah really pleased as he definitely seems to be over the worse of it!

Got to try and clean him off soon but dont want to do it too early in case I stress out the little guy. Any ideas on the easiest way?

Got his tank all cleaned ready for his move in a few months just worried that his current cage will be far too small for him once he has recovered as its barely 24cm by 12cm! Just keeping him in that one as he didnt need to move much.

Anyways will let you know in a couple of days time how he gets on

Thank you all. Was really upsetting. We've buried him in the garden and given him a little headstone so that we dont forget him as he was such a little character. We have tipped all the stuff that he had contact with so that no other poor little hammies will catch anything.

I know that in a few weeks we are going to look at getting a new hamster just wondering what tips people have (it would be a shame to waste the massive new tank that we have already kitted out with stuff that hamtaro was going to use!)
