You need to clean the cage really well and leave at least two weeks before getting a new hammy.
Can you tell us where you are and we may be able to put you in touch with a breeder who could hopefully give you a happy, healthy and tame baby hamster.

He didn't actually go in the tank that we have left as we thought that we would wait until he had fully recovered like you suggested we threw the ones that he was ill in away. We live near Dover in Kent, but am prepared to travel a little bit to get a nice healthy hamster. My partner is concerned about getting another syrian as the process has to be honest been quite upsetting but not certain about the other varieties.

You are quite out of the way down in kent but there are some hamsteries down south. Sue and Mark at Bourne Valley hamsters in Dorset breed all type so they would be worth contacting. They have beautiful hamsters and they should be tame and will not be stressed by handling as they are used to it. Also the is Alphabet Hamstery in Swindon, Tristar in Bath, Bluebell hamstery, Oak farm rodents and a few others round your way-ish. Contact the secretaries of Midland and also Southern Hamster clubs and they should be able to put you in touch with your nearest breeder of any species you are interested in. Also look in the UK breeder section in the forum. Hope that helps.
Try and not let this experience colour your view of syrians as poor little Hamtaro was unlucky. A well bred hammy should not suffer the same fate. When you feel ready then contact some breeders. I hope you find a new little one to share your lives as I know you would make wonderful, caring hammy parents :0
