Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
Kaytee Potty Litter, 16 Ounce by Super Pet: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies
I have been using this in my hamster's litter box for a while. I've never had any serious problems with it but I'm not 100% sure it's safe. It says it's made of "clay formed from volcanic ash". It's all natural ingredients, but clay doesn't really seem safe for my hamster to eat. It's also a little too dusty for my liking, though that hasn't caused to much of a problem. Do you think it's safe? If not can you suggest some alternative litters? Thanks for your help.

Re: Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
It's one of those things that is a bit yes and no. No it's not really safe if eaten, but usually ok otherwise. Ours tried to eat a bit the first time I put it out but he spat it out again and hasn't tried since. It's also important it is the hamster version (like you have shown in your link).
Alternatives are - using Chinchilla Bathing Sand in the potty instead. I switched to this after a while but then went back to the potty litter again as Charlie just kicks the sand out lol. Then back to sand again because the potty litter got expensive. Now I put sand in and cover it with a bit of substrate (ie kind of hide the sand!)

Re: Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
Id rather not get it because there is other litters that are better and it can hurt there digestive system if they eat it. And if they have to much then can die so be careful with it

Re: Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
I had problems with one of my hamsters taking potty litter pellets into his nest & was worried he may eat it so I switched to chinchilla sand & have used it ever since, it's actually easier to spot clean imo & more economical.

Re: Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
I would probably just stuck to chinchilla sand, as Serendipity suggested. It is much safer and cheaper. Just make sure it is sand and not dust. The dust can be very bad for their respitory systems. I use this stuff:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pack-Supreme...a+bathing+sand
It is a it more in the expensive side, but overall worth it as it truly is 100% dust free. Plus, in the UK, you can get it in bulk!

Re: Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
I've actually tried chinchilla sand before, but he doesn't like to use it as litter. He prefers to dig and roll in it, lol. The Kaytee stuff is the only litter I've found that he seems to know how to use properly, though I don't want to keep giving it to him if it's going to hurt him.

Re: Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
I know I felt like that for a while. It's only a problem if he eats it and if he's never done that before I don't see why he should now. You could try the sand with a bit of substrate over it (so he can't see the sand lol).

Re: Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
Another alternative is hemp pellets, they do break down very easily in water so would be safe if he did ingest a bit, very absorbent but don't go mushy so easy to clean.

Re: Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
I'm using children's play sand for potties at the moment, as the chinchilla sand can be a bit pricey when you use a lot of it. Nibble faithfully wees behind the potty these days but at least he always goes in the same place lol and he also wees in one corner of his sand bath if he's playing in his sputniks. Glowy is weeing in his sand bath and using it as a sand bath too, so I have to empty it every day! I like the play sand because it clumps really well so is easy to spot clean. I bake it in the oven to dry it out and sterilise it.

Re: Is Kaytee potty litter safe?
I just been told off by a tiktok user about using Kaytee litter cause it's clay and could "Kill my hamster". Can I just check that if she isn't eating it and is just digging, pooping and cleaning herself in it, then is it ok? I do have a sandbath with niteangel stuff in it, and a jar with ecoearth substrate, so kaytee is not the only thing I use. I know there are other litter I can use, but that was the one I have at the moment, as am planning to order the niteangel toilet purple bag, would anyone know if that is safe too? Amazon.com
or if it's better to get the blue bag sand version Amazon.com
