I do have a sandbath with niteangel stuff in it, and a jar with ecoearth substrate, so kaytee is not the only thing I use. I know there are other litter I can use, but that was the one I have at the moment, as am planning to order the niteangel toilet purple bag, would anyone know if that is safe too? Amazon.com
or if it's better to get the blue bag sand version Amazon.com
My concern with using kaytee litter is the fact it made of bentonite clay (the same as some clumping cat litter) that if the hamster ingests any it will absorb water. And in the rare chance large quantity is eaten it will clump and cause an internal blockage which could cause a fatality. Hamsters are often smart and shouldn’t consume it - a little nibble on it shouldn’t cause harm (as bentonite clay is made into a supplement for humans as has health benefit). Personally I wouldn’t use it for my hamsters. I don’t think it will necessarily kill your hamster but could possible pose a serious health risk if large quantities are consumed.

I used to use sand as a litter tray for my past hamster however for my current hamsters I use paper pellets (back 2 nature) don’t think these are available in the USA.

But looking at the link the Niteangel litter (purple) looks okay as break down into sand when wet and they claim it reduces the risk of blockages. So appears safe but as I haven’t seen it before i haven’t got any experience with it.

Thank you SKB_Hamsters. It's horrible getting hamster Care shamed, cause I knew nothing before getting my hamster and after watch Victoria Raechel on YouTube, I straight away upgraded everything but there are minor things like that which I didn't know. But I will defo look at paper pellets. Thanks for the advice
Edit: is it this one that's ok for hamsters? Only using in the corner toliet, I saw niteangel does paper pellets too but it looks like they are colored which isn't ideal, i asume this back to nature is plain? I don't think it says. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Back-Nature...ps%2C75&sr=8-3
Thanks

Don’t worry about making mistakes it doesn’t mean you are a bad owner. A lot of people are quick to tell you what you are doing wrong but they don’t offer ways to improve. And I understand the worry you would have if someone said something would kill your hamster. I’ve made a lot of mistake owning hamsters in the 15 years I’ve owned them - having a tiny cage, fluffy bedding, tiny wheels to name a few but I’ve learnt and grown from these mistakes. Watching Victoria Raechel videos are a great learning source and if you have any concerns ask on here I’m sure someone will be happy to offer you advice.

Back 2 nature pellets are a grey colour.
I see that niteangel paper pellets are brightly coloured I assume this would no different to carefresh or kaytee clean and cosy with the different colours. So I wouldn’t be too concerned and niteangel from what I’ve seen seems to be a good company for hamster products.

But if you are concerned about it being coloured or wanting a natural set up I would say go with the niteangel toilet litter (purple bag) or just the toilet sand (blue bag)
