Ah also was just wondering, obviously since I now have to sterlaize my cage etc would it be worth buying a new one? I wouldn't want the chance of their being any germs anywhere after he has recovered and then catching it again.
If so could anyone point me in the direction of a large cage that really doesnt break the bank? eBay really isn't an option unless they deliver or are extremely close to me but from searching I haven't been able to find any at all.
Also if this comes down to the worst possible outcome of Chomp passing away from not recovering (Touch wood he wont) I wish to buy another hamster, but not from a store of course, Does anyone know of a list of local breeders in or around Peteroborough?
Also as said above, what sort of 'wet foods' can I feed the little guy to keep his strength and weight up?
Thanks for all the help and support guys, not sure what i'd do without you all.

When we got custard back i just made sure i cleaned his cage and everything in it very thoroughly with antibacterial pet cleaner and he hasn't got it again so i wouldn't have thought you will have to get another cage, just make sure it's well cleaned.

i think the cage will be ok after a LOT of sterilising/cleaning etc.

It's such a shame this has happened to another poor baby from p@h. The trouble is that the cure, taking him in to be treated by their vet, is just adding to the problem of stress, which is usually why they get the illness in the first place (yanked from mother, long journey across the country, stuck in a tank, taken to a stranger's house etc.).

40g is VERY low for a 9 week old! Last night i was posting about a 7-week old that i was worried about because he is only 100g where his brother is 135g. Just to give you a comparison.

i'm affraid my knowledge on wet tail is limited, other than it's essential to get liquid into them. This can be a problem in cases where people think the hamster has just diarrohea because the treatment for that is different (stop all wet food). I know that wholemeal toast and pro-biotic yogurt is good.

hiya on the wet food subject i have read things on here about feeding ready brek warmed. also i would change his bedding he is sleeping in often for now as the germs will be about still if he is still poorly. i have just had my ham diagnosed with cushings disease so he poorly too. its rotten when your pets are ill. good luck with your hammy. i always recommend the imac fantasy cage as you can add levels to it as and when you can afford it. but you should be fine cleaning the one you have. my boys both live in them. also are you sure he is a boy as he seems to be lacking man parts in the pic? that may be because of his age though. xx

Aww Emmerz poor wee Chomp. He is indeed very light. Our nearly 8 week pups are all over 115g and average 125g. You need to worry about getting him well before you worry about weight though. He must eat. He will not get better if he does not eat. Is he still picking at his food or do you think he is eating it? You may need to give some soft food to get him to take something to tide him over. Something like readybrek made with water or baby food may tempt him. Arrowroot biscuits can help and if you can get the Critical care mix for small herbivores this can be syringe fed to him.
Try and keep the cage clean without too much undue disturbance and very good cleaning with pet safe disinfectant will ensure no bugs remain. I would not worry about a new cage for now. Just don't give wood toys that cannot be properly cleaned etc.
I really hope he pulls through for you. You are trying your best and nusing him well. Good luck

I'll be sure to give it an extremely good scrub then.
Also i'm sure he's a boy (: it's just the photo i'm afraid.
I'll have a go at feeding him so pro-biotic yoghurt and readybrek etc then.
Thanks for your help guys, and as for a update on his general condition he's coming out his house to wee now and seems to get up and have a drink so does this mean he's making a speedy recovery or is it not safe to say?
As for his weight, why is it that the vet did not comment on this? I thought it was very low but did not worry as he never explained what was normal.
Also Souffle, yesterday night I gave him fresh food in his feed bowl and he sniffed it out and filled his cheek pouches till they almost burst! but I did not hear him or see him eating and when I gave him his medicine earlier by the looks of things the same amount of food was still in his nest and untouched.

I think he is a boy too going by the pics. He seems to be peking up if he is coming out and picking up food. Hopefully he is eating it too. Bless him I hope he gets better and better. 3 days is usually the time it takes for the Baytril to really kick in.

It should take 3 days? That's good then maybe i'll be able to tell a difference come Sunday.
Should I worry if not?
I did think earlier he looked a little more himself and although he's not been out at all and still is sleeping now he seemed more alert when he was out his nest (:

If he still has the runs after the weekend or seems to worsen I would take him back to the vets. Even though it is stressful, if he loses any more weight or becomes weaker he will stuggle to make it. He has nothing to fall back on in terms of fat reserves you see.
