Default EDGAR IS POORLY, OW NO. :( MITES

hi,

ive just been up to clean out my hammys and edgar is poorly, he has always suffered with thin hair all his life and a large bald patch. but over the space of a few days he has lost practically ALL the hair on his under side. i am now worried he may go down hill. he is a good weight and still a busy bee but i am worried. unfortunatly i dont know his past as he was a rescue hammy from a center. he was believed to be young when i got him on the 10/10/08 and was living in a cage with other hams untill he was rescued. so he shouldnt be a year old yet but this may be wrong.

i have had a bald hamster before who just lost her hair but lived for ages after in a tank nearly totally bald. what could be causing this to happen to poor edgar now? help!

Sorry to hear edgar was poorly. The forum was quiet yesterday I guess and I was having a Mothers day break. You did the right thing in getting him seen so quickly and hopefully the meds will soon see him sporting a new coat. Did the vet say what the cause was? Was it mites or a skin infection?
Some debittered brewers yeast powder sprinkled on his food or in a porridge can help them grow the coats in well. You can get it in Holland & Barratt.

hi,

yes the diagnosis was mites. he has had medicine on his neck to kill them and needs repeating from home every few weeks over the next few months. i have seperated him from ellis who is still looking fine. one upstairs and one downstairs now! no toy sharing for a while now i dont think . but hopefully edgar wil start recovering soon. . i hope!
